David Woodland

April 22, 1930 — September 10, 2012

David Lee Woodland passed away Monday morning, September 10, 2012 at Grays Harbor Community Hospital, Aberdeen, after a short battle with cancer. He was 82. David was the third son of Earle C. and Marian (Carter) Woodland. He was born in Aberdeen on April 22, 1930.

He graduated from Weatherwax High School in 1948 and shortly after joined the Navy. After being honorably discharged in 1954 he went on to the University of Washington to get his BA degree in Business Administration in December of 1957. He then came back to Aberdeen to work with his father, Earle, in the family insurance business. David later assumed the business so that Earle could retire and play golf.

David married Patti Huff in 1970 and they lived and worked together, David running the insurance agency and Patti selling real estate through the Woodland Agency. During this time, David adopted Patti’s two sons into the Woodland family. Patti died here in 2005.

He was a member of the Aberdeen Elks Lodge, No. 593 and the University of Washington Alumni Association.

He is survived by 7 children: Patrick J., Olympia, Steven J., Tacoma, Blake D. and wife Lori, Olympia, Christopher M. and wife Bonnie, Aberdeen, Scott, Olympia, Laura M. and husband Mark McLeod, Olympia and Paula L. and husband James Flint, Shelton; and also 20 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. His cherished friend is Jan Hackstadt, who shared many joyous times with him in the last few years, and his cat, Tom. A son, John Paul, died before him July 22, 2012. He was also preceded in death by his three brothers, Earle Jr., Gordon, and Donald.

David retired in 2002 to help take care of Patti. He was a good father, a great husband and friend, and his legacy was very important to him.

A celebration of his life will be held at 1 PM Saturday, September 15th at the chapel at Fern Hill Funeral Home. Reverend John A. Fisher, pastor of the United Christian Church, will officiate. A reception will follow the service at the Aberdeen Elks Lodge on South Boone Street in South Aberdeen. A private family inurnment will have taken place in Fern Hill Cemetery.
