William "Bill" Alton James

William (Mr. Bill) Alton James, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his wife and children on February 18, 2025, at the age of 82.

Born in Aberdeen, Washington, on November 13, 1942, Bill was a lifelong resident of the area. He graduated from Aberdeen High School in 1960 and later attended classes at Grays Harbor College.

In 1987, Bill married Betty James (Matthews), and together they built a loving and devoted life. 

Bill worked for 32 years as a millwright at ITT Rainer until its closure. He then went on to finish his career at Meyer Signs, where he contributed to many iconic signs that adorn the streets of Aberdeen.

Known for his deep love of the outdoors, Bill was an avid golfer, fisherman, hunter, and camper. He also earned legendary status as a pool player throughout the harbor. Bill played on the Grays Harbor College golf team at the age of 50.

Bill is survived by his wife, Betty James, his sister, Debbie (Dave) Baker, his children Jackie (Scott) Reed, Bill (Katrina) James, and Brian Kelley, as well as his grandchildren: Ari, Tyler, Kennedy, Haley, Amaya, Madi, and Rylan, and his great-granddaughter Nahkaiya. He was preceded in death by his parents Alton (Pat) James and Frances Maxwell, and his brothers Tom and Pat James.

He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing him. 

There will be no public service. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to the Union Gospel Mission of Grays Harbor: PO Box 859, Aberdeen, WA 98520. (UGMgraysharbor.org). Arrangements are entrusted to Twibell’s Fern Hill Funeral Home in Aberdeen, WA.
