Russell Weigel

November 20, 1945 — December 20, 2019

Russell Edward Weigel, 74, a resident of Renton, WA for 30 years, died at a Renton hospital Friday, December 20, 2019. He was born the youngest of three children in Buffalo, NY, November 20, 1945, the son of Howard C. and Hazel V. (Foersch) Weigel.

In the 1960’s he and his parents moved to Ruskin, FL. He graduated from East Bay High School where he was the year book editor in his senior year. He worked in a beachside hotel restaurant during his senior year, of which he always reminded everyone. He loved to cook out on the grill and preparing holiday meals.

Russell went to work at a bank in Tampa, FL, working through different departments becoming a loan officer at the age of 20. He could make loans, but could not sign the checks as he was not yet 21. He had to get another officer of the bank to sign the checks.

He met his wife at the bank and they went on to have three sons and a daughter.

He left the bank to become a private detective. He investigated every kind of case, from divorce to capital murder. He oversaw 200 security guards at sporting events at Tampa Stadium as well as large events like musical concerts at the convention center.

Russell worked with major law firms throughout Florida and was a special deputy in Hillsborough County, Florida and the NAACP in Pinellas County, Florida.

In the 80’s he visited Seattle and fell in love with the area and people. Within 2 years he moved to Washington. He lived in Magnolia and West Seattle before moving to Westport for 5 years. He loved living on the ocean. When his parents needed assistance, he sold his condo and everyone moved to Renton.

Shortly after moving to Renton he started to do drafting new homes and remodels. He did this for several years out of his house so he could be there for his folks and his wife. Neuropathy made it so he could not feel his hands, so he had to stop drawing.

Russell was confined to a wheelchair for several years. He met lots of joggers and dog walkers in his flock and the dogs would not let their owners pass the drive with the big guy in the wheelchair with dog treats. They would drag their owners up to see Dutch for their treats.

He loved to watch and feed squirrels, raccoons and birds as well as his puppy friends.

He was proud that he had fathered 3 sons and that he “picked” his daughter from the top branch of the “baby tree”.

He was a member of St. Stephen’s Catholic Church, Renton.

Besides his wife, Diana Warner Weigel, Russell is survived by three son: Steven and Scott Weigel, both of SeaTac, WA and Troy (Theresa) Weigel, Stanwood, WA; a daughter: Heather (Ed) Guthrie, Fife, WA; 5 grandchildren, and 2 great grandchildren. A brother, David Weigel and a sister, Gail Webber, passed away before him.

A graveside funeral service was held in Fern Hill Cemetery, Aberdeen, WA.
