On September 12th, 2013 Mary Ann (Dolly) Walker made her final transition to be with her beloved husband who went before her in 2005, William G Walker. Mary Ann was also preceded in death by her parents, Mary and Matt Bender and brother Nick Bender. She is survived by her brother Robert A Bender (Barbara) of Wyoming, and sister-in-law Lucetta Bender of Montesano. Her nephews and nieces, who were like her own children; Robert Bender (Marianne) of Los Angeles, David Bender (Michele) of New York, John Bender (Robyn) of Issaquah, Patte Mulcahey (Ted) of Bellevue, Nikki Smidt of Bellevue, Boyd Bender of Seattle, and Michael Bender of Montesano. She also had fourteen great nieces and nephews, and fourteen great great nieces and nephews. Her dear friend Robbie Polzin was always there for her.
She was born Mary Ann Bender in Montesano, WA on December 2, 1930 at the family home. She graduated from high school in 1948 and attended beauty school during her junior and senior year of high school, but pursued other employment after high school at Grays Harbor Chair as a secretary and it was while working there that she met and fell in love with the shipping clerk, William (Bill) Walker. They were married on January 26, 1952 in Montesano.
She then spent time at E C Miller as an accountant, and then worked for Babcock and Willcock doing payroll, working from home, long before it was fashionable, a true pioneer of a telecommuting, without a computer, done all by hand, until she retired.
Bill and Mary Ann shared a home in Aberdeen where Mary Ann lived until her time at Pacific Care. They also had a place at the beach where they spent every weekend enjoying the ocean and beachcombing. They loved sports and had season tickets for high school basketball and football, which included attending the big Thanksgiving Day game between Aberdeen and Hoquiam every year.
Her biggest joy in life was her family and friends. She spent time sharing her greatest assets, her love, her big heart, her kindness and her giving nature. She was a member of the Catholic Church and a long time member, since birth, of the Croatian Federation.
She loved to bake, and her homemade fudge was a family favorite every Christmas along with the many pies that she would bring on the holidays.
Her Services will be held where she was baptized, at St John’s Catholic Church in Montesano at 10:00am, on Friday September 27th, with a reception to follow at the hall next to the church. We suggest donations in her name to the American Diabetes Association, or any charity you desire.
