Sheila Elizabeth Taylor, 70, a longtime Wishkah Valley resident, passed away surrounded by her family on Friday, February 10, 2017 at Grays Harbor Community Hospital in Aberdeen.
Sheila was born on April 5, 1946 in Raymond, WA to John and Elna (Carter) Clevenger. They moved to Wishkah Valley when Sheila was young and she never left. She attended Wishkah Valley School and was on the girls basketball team and she was also the homecoming queen her senior year. She graduated in 1964. On July 30, 1965, Sheila married Bradley Jerome Taylor, Sr. in Aberdeen. He resides at the family home.
Sheila was a housewife, but also took on many other roles. She was an avid Wishkah Valley sports booster. Her passion was watching her children and grandchildren’s sporting events and cheering them and the team on. She was known for and not afraid to voice her opinion during a sporting event, including one time when a referee was tired of her opinion and asked if she would like to give it a try. She took the whistle and finished the game for him.
She coached grade school basketball at Wishkah and helped get the grade school basketball program started. Sheila was on the Wishkah Valley School Board, drove school bus and for many years she was the football statistician when her sons were playing football and her husband coached. She helped her husband, Brad, coach the football team and was known as “Coach Mom” by many of the athletes in the valley. They always told their athletes that no matter what hour it may be, if they needed help or advice, their door was open.
Sheila was an avid reader. She also enjoyed playing bingo and trips to Las Vegas with her sisters. Additionally, Sheila liked to go hunting, camping and boating with her family. Family and friends were always her first priority. She was a member of the Wishkah Valley Booster Club, the Aberdeen Eagles and attended Wishkah Valley Community Church.
Sheila is survived by her husband of 51 years, Bradley J. Taylor Sr. of Wishkah Valley; sons, Bradley J. (Penny Castleberry) Taylor, Jr. and Robert John Taylor all of Wishkah Valley; a daughter, Shannon (Paul) Taylor-Bieker of McCleary; brothers: John Chadwell (Jean) Clevenger II of Wishkah Valley and Peter Arthur (Alice) Clevenger of Metlakatla, AK; Sisters: Helen Durham and Paula (James) Thompson both of Wishkah Valley; Grandchildren: Elizabeth (James) Walker, Cierra (Tanner) Martin, Amber (Lauren Almeida) Taylor, Donovan Bieker, Braden Castleberry-Taylor, Jillian Bieker; Great Grandchildren: Ayla Walker, Kinsley Martin and Kylan Martin; Cousin, Sandi Langford and cousin-in-law Sonny Willis; and she had numerous nieces and nephews. Sheila was preceded in death by her parents, John and Elna Clevenger, her special aunt and uncle, Al and Helen Green, and preceded in death last year by her cousin, Karen Willis, her brother and sister-in-law, Ed and Bobbi Jarvis.
