Dennis Such

June 8, 1929 — February 9, 2014

Dennis Donald Such, 84, longtime Aberdeen resident and former Longshoreman at the Port of Grays Harbor, died Sunday evening, February 9, 2014 at his home in Aberdeen.

Dennis was born on June 8, 1929 I Port Townsend, WA to Thomas D. and Lydia (Wexel) Such. He grew up in Quilcene, WA. He graduated from high school and worked at a creamery in Sequim.

In 1949, he moved to Brookings, OR where he worked for Swan Logging and South Coast Logging.

While living in Brookings, he met Carol “Bunny” Puckett and they later married on October 24, 1958, but only after he had spent the morning hunting. They then moved to Raymond in 1959 and he went to work at Weyerhausers Planer mill until 1963. He then started Longshoring at the Port of Raymond. In 1965, they moved to Aberdeen and he then Longshored for the ILWU-PMA local #24 at the Port of Grays Harbor. He continued there until his retirement in 1991.

He was a member of the Aberdeen Eagles and talking on the CB. He was an avid hunter of anything with a heartbeat and was legal to hunt, Elk, Deer and Moose. He also enjoyed clam digging, fishing and picking oysters. Dennis really loved being outdoors.

Dennis is survived by his wife of 55 years, Bunny Such of Aberdeen; a son, Dennis E. and wife Gina Such of Ketchikan, Alaska; two daughters: Kathleen and husband Walt Hewson of Annette Island, Alaska and Traci Such of Aberdeen; a sister Janet McQueen of Tacoma; four grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and one great great grandson and several nieces and nephews. Dennis was preceded in death by a brother Marvin Such and three sisters: Bernice Huckabee, Geraldine Pringle and Darlene Dau and a daughter, Michelle Such.

There will be a funeral for Dennis on Wednesday, February 19, 2014 at 1 PM in Fern Hill Funeral Home Chapel with a graveside to follow in Fern Hill Cemetery. A reception will follow at the Kaleo Community Church, 212 4th St., Hoquiam. Bring some food if you want and dress casually as he would have wanted it that way.
