William Ellis Strong, 77, a longtime resident of the Harbor, died at his home in Aberdeen, Monday evening, November 8, 2011. He was born in Centralia, WA, January 19, 1934, the son of Harley E. and Mary (Richard) Strong.
Bill graduated from Centralia High School in 1952 where he had played football and golf. He joined the Air Force and after his service attended Centralia Junior College. He went to work in Alaska in the late 1950s.
Upon return to the Harbor he owned and operated the Up & Up Tavern in downtown Aberdeen and was married at Cosmopolis to Mary A. Barriault on September 4, 1964. Mary passed away in 2008.
Bill was an operating engineer and had worked on the building of the Wynoochee Dam. He had also worked for many years for Quigg Brothers Construction. He retired in the early 1980s and then was in charge of maintenance at the Nordic Inn until it was sold.
He was a member of the Aberdeen Eagles. He enjoyed bowling, golf, taking long drives with his family, going to garage sales and attending his kids and grandkids sporting events.
Bill is survived by a daughter: Cheryl Sidor, Aberdeen; 4 sons: Robert Jr., Steven and Charles Babineau, all of Aberdeen and William B. Strong, of Reno, NV; and also 13 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and step-father, Charles Chipman, and a sister, Sally Peterson.
A celebration of his life will be held at 1 PM Monday, November 14th at Calvary Lutheran Church. A private inurnment will take place in Fern Hill Cemetery.
