Helen Esther Schweitzer, 94, lifelong Aberdeen resident died Tuesday, November 1, 2011 at Grays Harbor Community Hospital in Aberdeen.
She was born in Markham, Washington, to Charles V. and Hulda Minnie (Heikkinen) Leiden on November 20, 1916.
She was raised in Aberdeen, attended grade school in the Washington School in South Aberdeen, graduating in 1935 form Weatherwax High School. Helen was very active in class reunions.
On October 16, 1936, she married Joseph N. Schweitzer, in St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Aberdeen. He died on September 14, 1999. They had been married for sixty-three years at the time of his death.
The Schweitzer’s owned rentals in Aberdeen and Hoquiam for 25 years.
Mrs. Schweitzer was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Aberdeen and of Our Lady of Good Help Catholic Church in Hoquiam. She belonged to the Twin Harbor Pensioners of The International Longshoreman and Warehouse Union/Pacific Maritime Association and the Leisure Club of Wishkah Valley.
In the 40’s, she was a Den Mother with the Cub Scouts at A.J. West school and also the Girl Scouts.
She loved animals, especially her dongs, Maggie, Bullwinkle, Heidi, Minnie and Sparky. She enjoyed clam digging, music, cooking, traveling, and was known for her collection of cookbooks and cow figurines.
Helen is survived by three sons: Edward J. of Chicago, Illinois, Robert C. of Puyallup, and Donald J. of Aberdeen; one daughter, Suzanne (Joan) of Hoquiam; eight grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph. She was also proceeded in death by her brother, Charles (Uno) Leiden.

There will be a time of visitation on Sunday, November 6th from 1 to 5 PM in Fern Hill Funeral Home. A private family graveside service will take place at a later date in Fern Hill Cemetery
