Longtime Aberdeen resident, Janice L. Schoening, died at Pacific Care Center, Hoquiam, Saturday, April 5, 2014. She was 79. Janice was born in Everson, Washington, February 18, 1935, the daughter of John and Genevieve (Hunter) Lenss. The family moved often seeking work during the depression years, coming to the South Beach area of Grays Harbor in the late 1930s.
Janice graduated from Ocosta High School in 1953, where she had been a cheerleader, and received an Associate of Arts degree in Art and Literature from Grays Harbor College in 1955.
She worked for Pioneer Florist of Aberdeen from 1954 to 1957 and was married to Frederick C. Schoening in Aberdeen on September 7, 1956. He passed away in Aberdeen July 30, 1998.
Janice would become associated with Pacific Northwest Bell in 1957 as an operator and clerk, spanning thirty years before her retirement in 1987.
Janice was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America, the North Willapa Harbor Grange and had been a life-long ardent Democrat. She enjoyed art, working in charcoal; gardening, cooking, sewing and music.
She is survived by a sister: Myrna (Wayne) Turner, Kent, WA; a brother: Dennis Lenss, Aberdeen; 7 nieces and nephews: Phyllis Grubb, Marc Bollman, Hal (Diane) Bollman, Gary Dean (Nikki) Lenss, Paul (Tanna) Watson, Stephanie (Christopher) Daley-Watson and Darrel (Angel) Bollman; and life-long friends, Shirley Crowell, Aberdeen and her daughter, Linda (Ed) Finney, Silverdale, WA.
A graveside funeral service was held at 11 AM Monday, April 14th in Fern Hill Cemetery, Aberdeen. Pastor Brad Gill of Light and Life Community Church officiated. A reception followed in the Dorothy Mann Reception Hall at Fern Hill Funeral Home.
