Alice Schmid

October 13, 1923 — January 5, 2013

Alice Ruth Schmid, 89, longtime Aberdeen resident and former Stenographic Supervisor for Lamb Grays Harbor, died surrounded by family as she went to meet her Lord in Heaven Saturday, January 5, 2013 at Grays Harbor Community Hospital in Aberdeen.

Alice was born on October 13, 1923 in Rural Latah Co., Idaho to Earl and Mary Ruth (Wilson) Barnhart. She lived in Hyak, WA in her younger years as her dad worked for the railroad and then moved to Tacoma where she graduated from Lincoln High School.

On February 5, 1944, Alice married Marvin George Schmid at the First United Methodist Church in Tacoma, WA. He died on May 8, 1996.

Following Marvin’s Honorable Discharge from the Navy, they moved to Aberdeen worked for the OPA, Rayonier, later went to work for Lamb Grays Harbor Co. Sept. 22, 1958. She retired in 1984.

Alice was also one of the founding members of the Lamb Grays Harbor Federal Credit Union June of 1965 (now known as Newrizons Federal Credit Union) where she was the Treasurer and served on the board of directors for 40 years. She practically ran it single handedly as a volunteer on a card table at home until they eventually made her an office to work out of and later she hired Terry Fultz in 1979. Alice was known for her quick wit and sense of humor.

Alice was a member of Eastern Star, Zonta, Discovery Tours and was an active member of United Methodist Women, Faith Fellowship, First United Methodist Church in Aberdeen, attended Bible Studies put on by Kevin and Barb Caskey at Channel Point. After her retirement from Lamb-Grays Harbor Co. in 1984 she and Marvin traveled the United States in their motor home took cruises to Alaska, Hawaii, Mexico, The Caribbean and final cruise was to the Panama Cannel. She also took a trip with Discovery Tours with friends to Branson. She loved golfing. Alice and Marvin golfed on many beautiful courses throughout the United States. She belonged to both pinochle and bridge clubs, loved playing Polish Poker, Bingo, Mexican Train, Yahtzee and other activities with her friends at Channel Point where she lived the past 5 years. Among her many interests she loved the Gaither’s a Gospel Christian group. She attended several of their concerts with her daughter and son-in-law and got great pleasure watching their performances and listening to their CD’s. Alice also enjoyed watching her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Alice is a cancer survivor.

Alice is survived by a son Rick Schmid of Renton and a daughter Caroline and husband Bill Hardy of Aberdeen; five grandchildren: Bryan, Joe, Kayla, Billy and Melanie; and eight great grandchildren. Alice was preceded in death by her parents Earl and Mary Barnhart, a brother, Bill Barnhart a sister, Doris Howell and beloved family pet Mitzie.

There will be a celebration of life service for Alice on Friday, January 11, 2013 at 11 AM in First United Methodist Church, Aberdeen, WA. with a reception following the service.

She will be inurned next to her husband at Fern Hill Cemetery, Aberdeen.
