Wanona Poe

December 17, 1914 — February 19, 2011

Wanona Poe, 96, passed into the loving arms of God, Saturday, February 19, 2011 at her home in Aberdeen. She was born December 17, 1914 in Portland, OR, the daughter of Val and Effie (LaBrie) Mendenhall. She had lived on the Cree Indian Reservation in Montana until the age of 5. She, her mother and step-father, David Lyons, moved to Aberdeen where she attended school until her sophomore year when she moved to Boring, OR to stay with her father, Val.

She graduated from Sandy High School in 1932 and then St. Joseph’s School of Nursing in Oregon. In 1936 she returned to Aberdeen to marry her childhood sweet heart, Kenneth Poe. They made there home here with their daughter, Lynnda, until 1967 when they moved to Clatskanie, OR.

Wanona was a member of the Clatskanie Presbyterian Church and the VFW. She and Kenneth were avid bowlers and spent many years traveling together.

For the past two years she has been living with her sister-in-law, Almeda Lyons and niece, Donna Estes and her husband, Gale, in Aberdeen. During the day she was lovingly cared for by her great niece, Mellissa Newberry.

Wanona was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth in 1992 and their daughter, Lynnda in 1972, her brothers, Lyonal, Forrest and Donald Lyons, Val and LaVern Mendenhall, and her sisters, Neva Thornten and Sestaclola Gaulene.

She is survived by her sister-in-law, Almeda Lyons, Aberdeen and numerous nieces and nephews.

A private entombment took place in the Fern Hill Cemetery Mausoleum.
