David Olsen, 96, Aberdeen resident and former Battalion Chief for Aberdeen Fire Department, died Tuesday morning, February 2, 2016 at Pacific Care Center in Hoquiam, WA.
David was born on December 16, 1919 in South Bend, WA to Paul and Eugenia (Pedersen) Olsen. He attended school in South Bend and in 1943, he joined the Army. He was part of the 1394th Construction Battalion stationed in Cebu, Philippians where he helped build roads, bridges and hospitals. He was Honorably Discharged in January 1946 and returned to Aberdeen.
On September 21, 1946, David married Mary Delia Grgurinovich in St. Mary’s Parish House. Mary died on July 3, 2006 in Aberdeen.
David went to work for the Aberdeen Fire Dept. on September 4, 1950 and upon his retirement on February 4, 1978, was the Battalion Chief of the Aberdeen Fire Dept.
He was a member of the Aberdeen VFW and Aberdeen Elks Lodge. He liked to play golf and go hunting and fishing. He also liked to travel with his wife and family including trips to Hawaii, China, Yugoslavia, England and Russia.
David is survived by a son Paul and wife Martha of Battle Ground, WA and a daughter Nancy Olsen of Aberdeen; grandchildren: Jessica (Jared) Zabaldo of Happy Valley, OR with their children: Sydney, Jordan and Roslyn. He was preceded in death by a grandson Austin Olsen.
A funeral service with military honors for David, will be held on Tuesday, February 9, 2016 at Noon in Fern Hill Funeral Home Chapel. He will later be entombed at Fern Hill Mausoleum with his wife Mary.
