Ruth E. Niemi, 95, a Westport resident for over 45 years, died at her home there Friday, January 14, 2011. Ruth was born in South Bend, Washington on June 14, 1915, the daughter of Robert and Esther (Haig) Lawler.
She was raised in South Bend, attending schools there. She married Neilo Niemi in South Bend in 1930 and they moved to Seattle during World War Two. Ruth had become a nurse and worked at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle until moving to Burien in the late 1940s.
She was a nurse and receptionist at doctor’s offices in Burien for many years before she and Neilo retired and moved to Westport. She worked at the Seahorse Charters and after Neilo died at their home in Westport in 1967, Ruth continued to work at the charter office until she was 80 years old.
Ruth continued her active life, volunteering at the Westport Senior Center, and also digging clams, canning and gardening until very recently.
Ruth has two daughters: Carol Carnahan, Goldendale, WA and Annette Klatt, Cambridge, MN. There are also 10 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and 6 great great grandchildren. A daughter, Barbara Layton, preceded her in death.
Ruth had many good friends and neighbors who helped and cared for her greatly. She loved living at the beach.
A private inurnment service was held at Fern Hill Cemetery, Aberdeen.
