Olga Morrow

September 30, 1926 — July 23, 2011

Olga A. “Bertha” Morrow went home to her heavenly Father on Saturday, July 23, 2011 at Montesano Health and Rehabilitation Center, Montesano, WA following a brief illness. She was 84 years old. Bertha was born in Aberdeen on September 30, 1926. She was raised in South Aberdeen by Mary and Olaus Johansen and graduated from Weatherwax High School in 1945.

On October 6, 1945, Bertha married William D. “Don” Morrow in Aberdeen. They courted via letters while Don was serving in the Navy during World War Two. He passed away in 2001. They had lived in South Aberdeen all of their married lives, but were snowbirds in Hemet, CA for many years. They enjoyed many adventures camping and traveling as well as square dancing.

Family was important to Bertha. Donna’s family has many fond memories of playing cards and games with “Berth’s rules”. She didn’t like to lose at cards. Bertha loved her yearly winter trips to Lake Havasu City, AZ to visit her daughter Patty and Mel Peterson, granddaughter Lisa and Jason Schrotberger and to watch her great-grandchildren, Leyton and Cameron, play baseball. Watching her son Bill run the Boston Marathon and visiting historical sites in Washington, DC was one of the highlights of her life. She was proud to be a member of the Greatest Generation and was an advocate for seniors.

Bertha worked as a librarian at Stevens Elementary School. She was very involved with the PTA and was a Golden Acorn recipient for that work. She was always actively involved in her community and church. Described as a “people person” Bertha always kept a full social calendar and enjoyed visiting and helping others. She was past president of the Leisure Manor Homeowners. In 1983 she and Don helped start the Prime Timers, a senior group at Immanuel Baptist Church in Hoquiam. She organized social events for the group until shortly before her death. She also attended quilting at the Hoquiam Senior Center and volunteered at the Aberdeen and Hoquiam Senior Centers. Until three months before her death she was still teaching line-dancing at the Hoquiam Center.

Survivors include her two daughters: Donna (Bill) Clements, Hoquiam and Patty (Mel) Peterson, Aberdeen; a son Bill (Claudia) Morrow, Sunnyvale, CA; a half-brother: Don Estes, Gig Harbor; and also five grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren. Her special gentleman friend Harley Grimes passed away in January 2011.

A memorial service will be held at 11 AM Friday, August 5th at Immanuel Baptist Church, 1200 Soule St., Hoquiam. Pastor Ken Gravley will officiate. Private inurnment will take place in Fern Hill Cemetery, Aberdeen.
