Sarah R. Miller
Longtime Harbor and South Beach resident Sarah Roberta (Wilkins) Miller known by most as “Grambo” or Grandma Sarah passed away at Pacific Care Center in Hoquiam on May 31, 2012 at the age of 96.
Sarah was born on the evening of September 15, 1915, the same night the Essex Hotel in Cohasset Beach burned to the ground. Her parents were Robert and Alpha Lucretia Valentine. Sarah’s mother was a member of the Montesano area pioneering Valentine Family. Sarah was the last of 6 children.
Sarah met Roland Miller, a Surfman with the U.S. Coast Guard at the Grays Harbor Lifeboat Station and the couple were married in Westport on May 8, 1932. They had five children: Florine Williamson-Crockett of Aberdeen; Roland Miller Jr. of Laconner; Marcia Discher of Westport; James Miller of Central Park; and Bernard (Bert) Miller of Shelton. Sarah’s children blessed her with 17 grandchildren; who produced 33 great grandchildren, who in turn had 19 great- great grandchildren.
Sarah was a working mother who worked a number of years at Harry Harm’s Grocery, Grayland Hardware, was a restaurant cook and cleaned and clerked various motels and even put in time at the crab canneries.
She was a gifted knitter and took up painting and gardening as life-long hobbies. Sarah was still painting at age 96.
Sarah is preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Roland Miller, daughter Florine Williamson-Crockett, son James Miller, granddaughter Kelli Miller, grandson Andrew Miller and son-in laws Richard Discher and Fred LaPointe.
Sarah was a member of the South Beach Presbyterian Church for over 50 years and a life-time member of V.F.W Post 3057. Sarah was also an long-time member of the Aberdeen-Westport Senior Center.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, June 23, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. at the South Beach Presbyterian Church in Westport.
