Opal E. McMillan, 90, a former longtime resident of Aberdeen, died at Mother Joseph’s Care Center, Olympia, Wednesday, November 27, 2013. She was born in LaCenter, WA, October 11, 1923, the daughter of Oren Wesley and Elizabeth (Olstead) Horn. She was raised in LaCenter and graduated from LaCenter High School.
Following graduation she went to Portland, OR, where she worked as a waitress. It was there that she met Charles “Mac” McMillan and they were married in Vancouver, WA, March 16, 1944. They then moved to Reno, NV and in 1948 they came to Longview. Opal worked as a checker for Safeway and in 1956 when they came to Aberdeen, she continued to work for Safway as her passion was working with people.
Opal was an active member of the Elks and Eagles Auxiliary’s. She also enjoyed taking road trips to the beach, clam digging, and spending time with her family. Over several years, Opal has gathered a huge collection of turtle figurines. She liked to bake and was famous for her peanut butter pies.
Her husband, Mac, died in Aberdeen, April 10, 1975. After his death she continued to live in Aberdeen. After 40 years of service, she retired in 1990 and moved to Tumwater in 2003.
Opal is survived by a daughter: Sandra (Larry) Cline, Olympia; a son Steven (Cheryl) McMillan, Olympia; a sister: Louise Benedict; one nephew and three nieces; four grandchildren: Genora Chappell, Tera Scherr, Keri Smith and Sarah McMillan; and also six great grandchildren. A grandson, Charlie McMillan, preceded her in death.
Visitation will be held from 1-8 PM, Thursday, December 5th at Fern Hill Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 11 AM, Friday, December 6th at the funeral home. Interment will be in Fern Hill Cemetery.
