Leona Bouchard Mayton, 102, a resident of the Harbor for over 70 years, passed away at Grays Harbor Community Hospital, Aberdeen, March 8, 2020.
Leona was born in Schuylerville, New York, September 26, 1917, the daughter of Zepher and Jennie (Venne) Bouchard. She was raised in Schuylerville and graduated from high school there in 1935. She worked two jobs to be able to attend college and graduated from New Paltz Teachers College in New York in 1940. She was the first person of her family to graduate from college.
She taught school in rural New York and took a second job to supplement her teacher’s salary, working at a warehouse, packaging supplies to be sent to soldiers during World War Two. Her supervisor, a Navy serviceman that would insist she go on a date with him, several times, would eventually become her husband following the War. Leona and Robert J. Mayton were married July 7, 1946 in Schuylerville. They came to the Northwest almost immediately, he being still in the Navy at Bremerton. Robert was discharged in 1946 and they came to the Harbor where he eventually established the Mayton Construction Co. in 1947. He died in Aberdeen, January 29, 1995.
Leona’s faith was strong and important to her all her life. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. She would volunteer for thirty plus years at each of the St. Joseph’s Convalescent Home at the East Campus Facility, Pacific Care Center, Hoquiam and St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Aberdeen.
The most important to her was her family which she is survived by two sons: Robert J. (Susan) Mayton, Aberdeen and John L. (Sandra) Mayton, Quinault; four grandchildren: Jennie (Tim) Beaudin, Amy (Paul) Porter, Robert H. Mayton and Michael Mayton; four great grandchildren: McKaylee and Rylan Beaudin, Isabella and Lily Porter and Madison Porter. Leona was preceded in death by a daughter, Anne Marie Mayton, December 13, 2013 and her first-born child, a traumatic loss for Leona, Robert Joseph Mayton, March 23, 1947.
Visitation will be held Sunday, March 15th from 3 to 6 PM in the chapel at Fern Hill Funeral Home, 2208 Roosevelt St., Aberdeen.
A Rosary will be recited at 10:30 AM Monday, March 16th at Fern Hill Funeral Home Chapel. A funeral service will follow in the funeral home at 11 AM.
Burial will take place at Fern Hill Cemetery and a reception will follow immediately at Cosmopolis Lion’s Club.
