Ronald Matthynssens

October 20, 1963 — January 23, 2024

Ronald “Ron” Ray Matthynssens, 60, Harbor resident and Custodian for Hoquiam School District, died Tuesday, January 23, 2024, at his home in Central Park, WA. Ron was born on October 20, 1963, in Portland, OR to Robert William and Alice May (Notter) Matthynssens. After living in Orchards, the family moved to Olympia and then to Lake Quinault. He worked at the high school there and at the Lake Quinault Lodge before graduating in 1982. Three weeks later, Ron shipped off to basic training with the Marine Corps. Following three years there, he transferred to the US Army for three and half years.

After his military service, Ron returned to the Harbor and worked with the National Park Service doing Custodial work. He then went back to work for Lake Quinault Lodge where he met and fell in love with the receptionist, Helena Hunley. Helena got a job in Florida with Wal-Mart, but returned to marry Ron on April 5, 1997 in Aberdeen. Ron moved to Florida later to be with Helena because of her job at the time. He worked at Applebees and at Indian River Memorial Hospital as a dietary cook in Vero Beach, FL. In 2006, Helena transferred to Aberdeen, and they moved to Central Park. Helena passed away on November 13, 2019.

Ron worked part-time with Hoquiam School District as a custodian. He was later hired full time with the Hoquiam School District where he was still working Monday. Ron was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church in Hoquiam. He loved to cook, experimenting with seasonings and combinations, but breakfast to him was bacon. He also liked watching NASCAR.

Ron is survived by his three sons: Ian, Charlie and Noah Matthynssens all of Central Park; his mother, Alice Matthynssens of Hoquiam; a brother, Bruce (Joey) Matthynssens of Oklahoma City, OK; three sisters: Janice Matthynssens of Missouri, Della Carlston of Maple Valley, WA and Roberta Rose (Langley) Stallard of Hoquiam. He was preceded in death by his wife of 22 years, Helena Matthynssens, his father, Robert William Matthynssens and a still-born brother, Robert William Matthynssens, Jr.
