Velma Nadine Laaksonen, 93, a longtime resident of Aberdeen, died Saturday, October 29, 2011 at Grays Harbor Community Hospital in Aberdeen.
She was born on April 2, 1918 in Pittsburg, Kansas to Wiley John and Shelly V. (Kearnes) Guss. She graduated from high school in Pittsburg, KS.
On July 2, 1938, Velma married Helmer Waldemar Laaksonen in St. Joseph, Missouri. He later died on February 18, 1991.
They moved to Aberdeen in 1939.
Velma was a homemaker and loved to sew. In the 60’s, Velma worked at Dr. Walsh’s office for over eleven years.
Velma was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Aberdeen and volunteered at the church. She was active in the PTA and was also a Boy Scout and Girl Scout Leader.
Velma is survived by a son, Kay Wiley and wife Lynn of Edina, MN; a daughter, Linda and husband Rob Hay of Elma; Four grandchildren: Eric and Leif Laaksonen, Brendan and Caitlin Hay and a great grandson, Trace Walker; Brother-in-law, Howard Murphy. Velma was preceded in death by a brother that died at infancy and two sisters: Mildred Murphy and Estella Woodling.
There will be a celebration of Velma’s life on Saturday, November 12th at 11:00 A.M. at Amazing Grace Lutheran Church in Aberdeen. A reception will follow in the Parish Hall.
