Gilbert Lee Krigbaum, 83, a Westport resident for over 70 years, died at Providence St. Peter Hospital, Olympia, Monday, February 4, 2013. He was born in Portland, OR, April 9, 1929, the son of Conrad and Opal (Forgey) Krigbaum. He was the oldest of seven siblings.
The family moved to Westport in the 1940’s and Gilbert attended Ocosta schools. He joined the Navy in 1947 but returned home to help support the family. He spent his life buying and building boats, fishing for crab and tuna on the coast, seining in southeast Alaska and tendering out of Cordova, AK. He was one of the founding stockholders of Washington Crab Producers. After many years in the fishery he retired in 2006.
He married Betty Lee Vinson in O’Leary Creek, WA on October 1, 1948 and she survives in Hoquiam.
Gilbert was a member of the Twin Harbors Baptist Church, now The Church of the Living Hope, in Westport. He had been a life-long supporter of the Republican Party, loved to ride horses and buy new vehicles, but his greatest joy was being out on the ocean.
Besides his wife of 64 years, Betty, Gilbert is survived by two daughters: Wendy L. and husband Tom Bodwell, Ocosta and Barbara L. and husband Tony Belesiotis, Olympia; a brother: Mike and wife Susie Krigbaum, Grayland; and four sisters: Patsy and husband Jim Dyer, Salem, OR, Sandy and husband Ron Richie, Ocean Shores, Norma and husband Doug Huston, Oncee, FL and Sally Winkler, Elma; and also six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
A celebration of Gilbert’s life will be held at 2 PM Wednesday, February 13th at the Church of the Living Hope, Westport. Pastor Ken Davis will officiate. A reception will follow at the church.
