Tyson Jones

December 25, 1921 — September 6, 2013

Tyson Hamel Jones, 91, lifetime resident of Aberdeen and former carpenter for Franciscovich Construction, died Monday afternoon, September 16, 2013 at Mother Joseph Care Center in Olympia.

Tyson was born on Christmas Day, 1921 to Edgar Russell and Kathryn Alleman (Hamel) Jones in Aberdeen. He graduated from Weatherwax High School in 1939 and then attended one year at Washington State College in Pullman. He joined the US Army Air Corps where he maintained and repaired B-17’s during the war. It was his job to also give the final say whether the plane was airworthy or not. He was Honorably Discharged in November 1945.

It was during his stint in the Army Air Corps that he married Ione Clarice Andersen on January 9, 1943 in Oakland, CA. She passed away on February 24, 2004.

Tyson was a carpenter and foreman for Franciscovich Construction from 1968 until his retirement in 1984. Before that he had worked for Arnie Holm Construction in Hoquiam.

Tyson was a member of the Carpenters Union, Local (?), Aberdeen Elks Lodge, Aberdeen VFW and a lifetime member of Aberdeen First Presbyterian Church.

Tyson loved playing his trumpet and had been a member of the Aberdeen Bobcats Band in high school, and for the Washington State College Band. He also played in various bands in the area before the war and for the Aberdeen Elks Band after the war.

He also liked to spend time at his summer home on Lake Nehwatzel, berry picking, river fishing, clamming and singing in the choir.

Tyson is survived by three sons: Kirk and wife Penny of Bainbridge Island, WA, Steve and wife Paula of Cosmopolis, WA and Edgar and wife Gwen of Olympia, WA; a daughter, Kathy and husband Ken Read of Anacortes, WA; Seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother Russell and a sister Elizabeth.

There will be a celebration of Tyson’s life on Saturday, September 28th at 2 PM in First Presbyterian Church in Aberdeen.
