Richard C. Hodge, 77, resident of Aberdeen, died Monday afternoon, December 3, 2012 at his home in Aberdeen.
Richard was born on March 1, 1935 in Boxley, Arkansas to Hulen & Gladys (Sparks) Hodge. He grew up there and in 1952 moved to Coquille, OR with his parents in a truck full of furniture.
In 1956, Richard married Penne Penn Livermore. They later divorced in 1971.
In 1978 he moved to Aberdeen and married Ann Manry-Estabrook on March 9, 1979 at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Aberdeen. She survives at the family home.
Richard went to work for Hoquiam Plywood in 1980 and worked as a panel patcher. He retired in 2006. Before that he had worked for Norway Plywood in Myrtle Pointe, OR and at Georgia Pacific in Coquille, OR.
When Ann decided to go back to school to become an RN, she and Richard worked at Our Saviors Lutheran Church as janitors to pay for her schooling for 3 years.
Richard was a member of the Elks Lodge and also the Edison, Georgia Lions Club. He also worked for Habitat for Humanity of Grays Harbor with his brother Ray Hodge. He liked to take pictures, paint, loved fishing and did some hunting, clam digging and camping at Wynoochee Wildwood. He had also traveled to almost all 50 states and in 2000 drove over 10,000 miles going across Canada and in to the U.S. visiting family all along the way.
Six years ago, Richard and Ann moved to Georgia. They returned to Aberdeen in April.
Richard is survived by his wife of 33 years, Ann Hodge of Aberdeen; a son, Danny Hodge of Coquille, OR; five daughters: Darlene and husband Mark Judd of Aberdeen, WA, Cynthia Schmid of Hoquiam, WA, Debi and husband Tim Snider of Klamath Falls, OR, Denise Hodge of Coquille, OR, and Suzy and husband Scott Laird of Aberdeen, WA; two brothers: Ray and wife Jean Hodge of Aberdeen and Everett Hodge of Cottage Grove, OR; sisters: Goldie and husband LeRoy Ames of Myrtle Pointe, OR and Bonnie Sue and husband Frank Smith of Port Orford, OR; a grandson Deric Hodge that Richard raised like his own son from the age of 3 and twelve grandchildren and one great grandson. Richard was preceded in death by two brothers: Wayne and CJ Hodge Jr. He was also preceded in death by his much loved dog Belle, that Richard looked forward to seeing again in Heaven.
There will be a time of visitation and viewing on Friday, December 7th from 1-8 PM in Fern Hill Funeral Home. A funeral service will take place on Saturday, December 8th at 10:00 AM at Amazing Grace Lutheran Church. Burial will follow at Fern Hill Cemetery, Aberdeen.
The family suggests that donations be made to either American Cancer Society, 1313 Broadway, No. 100, Tacoma, WA 98402 or Habitat for Humanity Grays Harbor, 1017 S. Boone Street, Ste 214, Aberdeen, WA 98520.
