Winona Hammonds

March 20, 1914 — June 24, 2012

Winona Arlene Hammonds, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend, passed away Sunday June 24, 2012 in Hoquiam. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Winona was born March 20, 1914 in Elma, Washington, the daughter of Irvin and Eliza (Jantzen) Urquhart. Her family moved to Montesano where she attended school.

In 1928 she married Wesley Harner. Together they attended ICS, a correspondence training and during World War Two served as aircraft warning officers stationed at the Burnt Hill Lookout on the North Beach for the U.S. Forest Service. Following the War they resided in Montesano and raised two children, Larry and Anna. Wes preceded her in death in 1970.

Winona moved to Aberdeen and was married to Mack Hammonds in 1971. She gained three more daughters, Carol, Jean and Barbara. She had been associated with the Grays Harbor County Treasurer and Clerks Office for 18 years, having been the County Clerk until she retired in 1978. Following retirement, she and Mack created many memories traveling the United States. Mack died in California in 1989.

She was very active in the Rebekah Lodge No. 26, Montesano, the Montesano Eagles Auxiliary, No. 363, the Montesano VFW Auxiliary No. 2455, First United Methodist Church of Aberdeen, Grays Harbor Chapter of Retired Public Employees, Hoquiam Christian Woman’s Club and for over 40 years a member of the Grays Harbor Democratic Party.

She enjoyed crocheting, gardening and spending time with family and friends. She made many lap blankets that were donated to the Veteran Hospitals.

Winona is survived by her children: Carol and husband Bob Graham, Longview, WA, Anna Harner Wages, Cathlamet, WA and Larry Harner, Woodland, WA; grandchildren, Michelle Brenner and Charley Graham; great grandchildren, Crissy and Calvin Graham, and Evan and Alison Brenner.

At Winona’s request there will be no formal service. She will be place next to her husband, Mack, in the Fern Hill Cemetery Mausoleum, Aberdeen.

The family suggests memorials may be made to your favorite charity.
