Theresa Julia Godfrey, 95, a longtime South Aberdeen resident, died surrounded by her family, at Pacific Care Center, Hoquiam, Wednesday, November 14, 2012. She was born in PeEll, Washington, the daughter of Frank and Julia Theresa (Gailey) Novak. She attended schools in PeEll. She was married to Herbert Godfrey on August 7, 1937, in a wedding celebration that lasted three days in their Polish community.
They moved to a farm in the Finch area of South Aberdeen in 1942 and raised corn as a part of the Victory Garden program during World War II. They also raised many farm animals including chickens, a cow and a donkey.
Theresa worked as a shrimp processor and crab shaker and later went to work for Ocean Spray in 1966 until she retired in 1980. She belonged to the Fraternal Order of Eagles, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, St. Mary’s Catholic Church and was active in the PTA while her children were in school. In the 1950’s she played for the “Bloomer Girls”, a women’s basketball team. She was also an active campaigner for the Heart Fund in Aberdeen.
She could often be seen knitting afghans, slippers or hats, and also like to garden and bake apple rolls. Her many travels included cruises to Alaska, the Caribbean, the Panama Canal and to Canada aboard the Princess Marguerite. Theresa also enjoyed watching her husband play horseshoes and watching her kids and grandkids play sports.
Her husband of 63 years, Herbert, died in Aberdeen in 2004. She is survived by two sons: Dave (Dorothy) Godfrey of Shelton and Herbert (Sharon) Godfrey of Grayland; two daughters: Betty (Tony) Meyer and Judith Folkers, both of Aberdeen; a brother: Johnny Novak of Olympia; nine grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her grandson Kurt Godfrey in 2010; her son-in-law, Keith Folkers in 2012; three sisters: Mary Novak, Sophie Gilliland, Stella Globensky; and her brother Joe Novak.
A private graveside service with the family present was held earlier this week.
