Longtime Montesano resident, Allen R. Gillman, 76, died at Grays Harbor Community Hospital, Aberdeen, Tuesday, March 11, 2014. Al was born in Bemidji, MN, April 13, 1937, the son of Raymond T. and Beulah Mae (Duhamel) Gillman. He came to Kelso, WA at the age of 14 and had attended Kelso schools.
He started work at the Longview Weyerhaeuser Pulp Mill transferring to the Cosmopolis Pulp Mill in 1957. He retired after 40 years with Weyerhaeuser in 1997 as a shift superintendent.
He married Sally Vance in Montesano, Aug. 24, 1991.
Al bought and restored tractors and drove them in tractor pulls. He was a member of the Antique Farm Engine and Tractor Assn. (AFE&TA) and OPATEA Tractor Clubs. He also enjoyed golf, travel and clam digging. A recent special event for Al was a trip back to Bemidji last June to visit his cousins in Minnesota.
Besides his wife, Sally, at the family home in Montesano, Al is survived by two sons: Todd (Stephanie) Gillman, Montesano and Michael (Pam) Gillman, Aberdeen; a daughter: Krista Sue Ballard (Shawn), Malvern, AR; a brother: Gerald (Linda) Gillman, Kelso; three sisters: Frances M. Karboski, Tenino, Dianne (Bill) Whitten, Castle Rock, and Shirley (Vern) Jacobson, Kelso; and also six grandchildren: Abbi, Jessi, Carson, Kobie, Jadyn and Jaegger. Other family members include several nieces and nephews; Brett (Kelly) Vance and Mark (Stacey) Vance; and an exchange student from Germany, Paulina Wendlant. A daughter, Angela Gillman, died at birth and sons, Steven and Gregory preceded Al in death.
A celebration of life will be held at 1 PM Sunday, March 16th at the Montesano Moose. A potluck reception will follow.
