Longtime Harbor resident, Dorothy Marie Gates, 91, died at Montesano Health and Rehabilitation Center, Wednesday, June 27, 2012. She was born April 9, 1921 in Astoria, Oregon, the daughter of Ellsworth and Dora (Jacobs) James. She came to the Harbor at the age of 2.
She attended Weatherwax High School. During World War Two she was the classic “Rosie The Riveter” at Boeing’s Aberdeen Plant. She had also worked as a bookkeeper for Strand Cannery and Stritmatter’s Cannery.
Dorothy married Robert H. Gates in Aberdeen on May 14, 1938 and following the War she was the bookkeeper for the family chip business as they supplied wood chips to the PUD for power production. She had also kept books for Herbig’s Jewelers until she retired to become a mother and homemaker in 1961. Robert died here in 1980.
She loved birds and had birdfeeders in every corner of her yard.
Dorothy is survived by two sons: Robert B. and wife Iris Gates, Goodyear, AZ and Richard L. and wife Rogene Gates, Aberdeen; and 9 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and 9 great great grandchildren. Two brothers, Bernard and Pat James and a sister, Peggy Skinner, preceded her in death.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00, Friday, July 27th at the Montesano Presbyterian Church.
