Sylvia Alice Carty, 92, a longtime Harbor resident, died at Pacific Care Center, Hoquiam, Sunday, December 29, 2019. Sylvia was born in Devon, Montana, May 28, 1927, the daughter of Olai and Kari (Kvello) Wigen. She was raised in Montana, came to Ocosta in 1965 until moving to Montesano in 1971. She would later move to Channel Point in Hoquiam.
Sylvia had attended school in Galata and Shelby, Mt., but graduated from Shelby, Mt. High School in 1945. She went to Montana State University at Missoula for a year and got married to James Harold Carty, September 1, 1946 in Devon, Mt. Sylvia would complete her teacher’s degree at MSU in 1964.
She taught school at Anacortes, WA in 1964-65 and in junior high and high school for Aberdeen schools. She also was a partner in the Grayland Hardware store and had been a bookkeeper at the Grays Harbor Sheriff’s Department in Montesano. She retired in the late 1990s.
She was a member of the Sons of Norway and also enjoyed painting in water colors and making greeting cards of pressed flowers. She played and taught piano and still found time to work in her garden.
Sylvia is survived by two sons: Michael (Barbara) Carty, Grayland and Robert (Laura) Carty, Bremerton; a daughter: Diana Lynn (Steve) Lightle, Lake Stevens, WA; and also five grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and one great great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her husband, James, in 1996; a granddaughter April Lea Carty; her brothers: Jurgen, Byron, Alton and Arthur Wigen; and her sisters: Cora Johansen and Olive Sparks.
There will be a gathering of the family later in the Spring.
