Barbara May Carlberg, 79, a lifetime resident of Grays Harbor died May 24th 2011 at Grays Harbor Health & Rehab in Aberdeen. She was born February 23rd, 1932 in Portland Oregon to Eugene and Nomah Yarrow who preceded her in death. A younger sister “Beverly” also preceded her in death.
Mom spent a brief childhood in Portland Oregon and was primarily raised Aberdeen Washington living on Olympic Highway in Central Park and attended Central Park Elementary, Miller Jr. High and graduated from Weatherwax High School in 1950. After high school she attended St. Peters school of nursing in Olympia Washington and graduated in 1953 as registered nurse. In August of 1953 she started her nursing career at the old Community Hospital location on Simpson Avenue as a patient care nurse. In 1960 she began working in the OB Department as the hospital transitioned to its present location on hospital hill. She remained in that position until leaving in September of 1975. She eventually went back to her nursing career once again by working as an office nurse for Dr. Herb Johnson from 1982-1992 and then retired.
On November 7th 1953 she married Alfred Carlberg at Trinity Lutheran Church in Aberdeen. He survives her along with her children.
Barbara enjoyed her arts and crafts. She was an avid oil painter and loved creating dried flower arrangements. She was a passionate fan of ice skating of all kinds and loved watching old cowboy movies. She and Alfred loved traveling but most of all cherished her friendships and family. One of her most favorite things to do was get together with her close friends group whom they met with monthly for social gatherings, dining and entertaining. She dearly loved her cats that she had over the years. She was a member of the Amazing Grace Church (formerly Trinity Lutheran)
In addition to her husband of 58 years she is survived by her brother Gene Yarrow of Yuma Arizona, three sons Dave (Debbie) Aberdeen Washington, John (Christine) Brooklyn New York, Mark (Heidi) Everson Washington, and a daughter Nancy of Montesano Washington. Barbara had six grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 11 AM Monday May 30th at Amazing Grace Lutheran Church (111 E 4th Street) in Aberdeen. A gathering will be held immediately following in the Parrish Hall. Arrangements are entrusted to Fern Hill Funeral Home and in lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Amazing Grace Lutheran Church.
