Kenneth George Bearden, 89, a fifty year resident of Westport, died at an Enumclaw, WA nursing facility Thursday, August 2, 2012. He was born in Hollis, OK February 5, 1923, the son of Robert L. and Mable B. (Roper) Bearden. He attended school in Hollis, OK and at Manzanola, CO where the family had moved.
Ken later went to Alaska and worked in canneries. He met Betty Phernetton and was married in Cordova, AK on September 9, 1950. They came to Los Angeles, CA in the early 1950’s and then McMinnville, OR in 1960 for a short time before coming to Westport that same year.
Ken worked for Washington Crab Producers and at the Westport Bowling Alley. Ken and Betty owned Pat’s In & Out in the 1960s and ‘70s. They later opened Pat’s Seafood Cannery. In 1977 they sold the business and Ken went to work as a warehouseman for Ocean Spray at Markham, retiring in 1987.
He was a member of the Olympic Ramblers RV Club. They liked to travel in their motor-home and he also liked to watch NFL football, going to rodeos, and eating good food.
His wife of 56 years, Betty, died in Aberdeen in 2006. Ken is survived by two sons: Bob Bearden, Enumclaw and William “Gary” Ormbrek, Sumner; and three grandchildren and six great grandchildren. A son, James Bearden, preceded him in death in 1985 and also three brothers: Joe, Robbie and Fred Bearden.
Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 PM Monday, August 6th at Fern Hill Funeral Home, Aberdeen. A funeral service will be held at 1 PM Tuesday, August 7th in the funeral home chapel. Interment will take place in Fern Hill Cemetery. A reception will follow in the Dorothy Mann Reception Room at Fern Hill Funeral Home.
