Jack Atkins

August 18, 1940 — June 11, 2013

Lifelong Aberdeen resident Jack Edward Atkins passed away peacefully at home with family by his side on Tuesday, June 11, 2013. Jack was born on August 18, 1940 in Goldendale, WA to Jesse and Lorena (Morgan) Atkins. He was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church and now has the privilege of being a heavenly spirit and basking in the sunshine of Christ (no more Harbor weather).

Jack was raised in Aberdeen and graduated from Weatherwax High School in 1959, where for a number of years, he was a member of the Boys’ Federation Parking Committee and Rifle Club.

After graduation he joined the United States Marine Corp and served in the 22nd Special Infantry Company as a reservist from 1959 to 1965; also having served in Vietnam. While serving, Jack also started his career at the Aberdeen Weyerhaeuser Sawmill and remained with the company until his retirement as Head Sawyer, on December 31, 2004. Many of his Weyerhaeuser friends fondly refer to him as a “legend”.

Jack is survived by his daughter, Teresa and husband David Ramirez of Aberdeen; grandchildren April Ramirez of Olympia and DJ (David Jack) Ramirez of Delaware; great grandson Parker Griffin of Olympia. Daughter, Heather and husband Jim Galloway; grandchildren Keelei, Jim Jr., and Melissa Galloway all of New Jersey. He is also survived by his mother Lorena Atkins of Aberdeen. His father, Jesse Atkins, preceded him in death. Survivors also include sisters Eva Hart of Montesano, Ethel Reed of Vancouver, and Sharlene and husband Dan Crevison of Olympia. His brother James Atkins preceded him in death.

Jack was an avid hunter and enjoyed many fishing trips with friends. He enjoyed spending his time watching sports into the wee hours of the morning, and once in a while he’d slip in a little National Geographic or the History channel.

There will be a celebration of life at 1:30p on Saturday, June 22nd at Immanuel Baptist Church, 1200 Soule Ave. in Hoquiam. A reception will follow. Military honors will be held at 4:30p at the Satsop Cemetery at 40 E. Satsop Rd. Grandson, David Jack Ramirez of the United States Marine Corp, will participate in rendering the gun salute.

The family suggests memorials may be made to Harbors Home Health and Hospice, 201 7th St., Hoquiam, WA 98550.
