Obituary for Mildred Ann Shumate (O'Brien)

Mildred Ann Shumate, 82, beloved wife, mother and grandmother of Satsop, WA departed this life on September 17th, 2022 surrounded by family and loved ones. Mildred was born on December 23, 1939 to Alma McCall in Portsmouth, Ohio. She grew up there and graduated from the local High School. She met her husband, Floyd Shumate through his sister Ruby and brother n law Fred. They were united in marriage on February 6, 1960 in Portsmouth, Ohio. They moved to Aberdeen in 1961 and then to North Carolina for 3 years before returning to Aberdeen. They moved to Satsop in 1972.

Mildred worked at Oakhurst Nursing Home in Elma as a nurse’s aide for a period of time but spent most of her life being a homemaker and taking care of her children and eventually, grandchildren. She was the Sunday School Director for Faith Tabernacle Church teaching children for many years and then at Central Park Neighborhood Church for the remainder of her life. She had a heart and a desire for children to learn God’s Word and devoted a majority of her time teaching and sharing God’s love through songs and bible stories. She was a prayer warrior and was also a member of the worship team.
She enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren, which usually included baking, canning, and working in her garden. She was a blessing and a companion to all who knew her. To know Millie, was to truly experience and know the unconditional love of Christ.
Mildred is survived by her husband of 62 years, Floyd Shumate of Satsop, WA; Five sons: LeRoy (Rochelle) Shumate of Satsop, WA, Scott (Tonia) Shumate of Satsop, WA, Rocky (Lisa) Shumate of Morning Sun, Iowa, Mike (Lorinda) Shumate of Chehalis, WA and Keith (Julie) Shumate of Pleasant Hill, MO; a daughter, Sherri (Juan) Harvey of Montesano, WA; 19 grandchildren and 20 Great grandchildren and 1 more on the way. Mildred was preceded in death by her mother Alma McCall, brother Bill McCall and sister Martha Barnhart.
There will be a Celebration of her life on Saturday, September 24, 2022 at 2 PM at Central Park Neighborhood Church.
Potluck to follow after the service in the fellowship hall.
Cremation arrangements are entrusted to Twibell’s Fern Hill Funeral Home in Aberdeen, WA.
