Obituary for Ray Roy Button

Ray Roy Button
Raymond Roy Button, 73 years of age and a lifelong resident of Grays Harbor, passed away on Jan. 3, 2015 at Summit Pacific Medical Center in Elma. He was born on July 12, 1941, in Aberdeen, Wash., the second son of Cecil and Dorotha (Markham) Button. He graduated from Weatherwax High School in 1959. He had lived in Aberdeen most of his life, but fulfilled a longtime dream when he moved to east Grays Harbor 3-½ years ago.

He married Helen Anderson in 1960, and they were later divorced. He married the love of his life, Charlotte Kolar Allen, on Sept. 15, 1984. She and grandson Connar Button survive him at the family home. Other survivors include children Russell and Cinnamon Button, Steven and Sheila Button, Richard and Diana Kolar, Angela and Shannon Roberts, Marlena and Marshall Born, and son-in-law Denny Lawrence. Also surviving are grandchildren Kevin and Kristal Lawrence, Eric and Alyssa Lawrence, Jason and Bethany Lawrence, Caysie Ann Williams, Garrett Button, Kyle Button, Ryan Roberts, Abigail Bell, Kaden Born, Elizabeth Roller and Cristie Mott; and great-grandchildren Hailey Lawrence, Ashley Lawrence, Cole Lawrence, Emylee Williams and Landon Lawrence.

In Sept. 2013, he was devastated by the loss of his daughter Caprice Lawrence.

He was also preceded in death by his father, Cecil Button, mother, Dorotha Smith, stepfather William Smith, three brothers, Elmer, Larry and Lee, and grandson-in-law Darrold Williams.

Outside of family, his greatest love was baseball, and he was happiest when he was on a baseball field. He played semi-pro baseball for three years in San Jose, Calif., and Portland Ore., before returning to Aberdeen in 1964. He began coaching youth baseball in 1969 when his oldest son started playing and coached both sons through Little League and Babe Ruth, continuing long after his sons were out of the program. He also coached three grandsons through the Babe Ruth program. When the Senior Babe Ruth program was started, he coached both a Babe Ruth and a Senior Babe Ruth team for two years, then Senior Babe Ruth for several more years, during which time his team won two state tournaments and a regional tournament. He retired in 2011 when he moved from Aberdeen. He was very proud of his induction into the Southwest Washington Babe Ruth Hall of Fame in 2008.

At his request, there will be no funeral. However, the family has scheduled a celebration of life on Sunday, Jan. 11, 2 p.m. at the Cosmopolis Lions Club. A message of condolence or of a memory can be sent to the family at www.fernhillfuneral.com.
